Allegany County acts as the administrative body of the state exercising those powers delegated by the state. Since becoming the second Maryland County to adopt Code Home Rule in 1974, the county government has the power to legislate any local issues with several state-imposed exceptions. We adopted a Board/Administrator form of government in 1996 with a three-member board of commissioners serving consecutive 4-year terms.
The Board of Commissioners is assisted by an appointed County Administrator to manage the day to day business. In addition, the Board is served by the County Clerk and Administrative Assistant.
County Clerk – Oversees recording, transcription and publication of all actions, minutes and documents generated by the Board. Serves as official custodian of all county records. Attends all public meetings and work sessions of the Board.
Administrative Assistant – Assists Clerk and Board in operation of office. Takes minutes, prepares all correspondence and documents for Board action. Attends public meetings, serves as appointments secretary, monitors budget and prepares department billing.
