Will I be bitten or scratched? It is always possible for an individual to be bitten or scratched while interacting with an animal. However, volunteers are shown ways to approach and handle animals that minimize this risk.
Will I bring any diseases home to my pets? If your pets have received all of the vaccinations they need, they will be safe. However, you may bring home fleas or other parasites. In order to minimize the risk of this happening, volunteers are urged to wash their hands with special anti-bacterial soap.
Does Allegany County Animal Control have a "no kill" policy? The Allegany County Animal Control does not have a "no kill" policy. If an animal is incurably ill or severely injured , euthanasia can be the most humane alternative.
Will I see animals euthanized or have to participate in euthanasia? Volunteers are in no way involved in euthanizing animals
I would like to try to dissuade people from turning in animals. May I? Allegany County Animal Control volunteers are not permitted to interfere in any way with the animal intake process. Only staff members are allowed to present alternatives to individuals who need to surrender an animal.
Does The Allegany County give animals to medical research facilities? The policy of Allegany County Animal Control is not to give any animals whatsoever to research facilities.
Can I volunteer even though I am allergic to some animals? A number of administrative and promotional positions are available to volunteers who can't tolerate frequent contact with animals. In addition, some positions require volunteers to interact only with cats or dogs.
Are there any provisions for physically challenged volunteers? The Allegany County Animal Control conforms to city, state and federal codes governing accessibility, and the Animal Shelter Manager helps physically challenged individuals find positions that are suitable for them. |
